Born in 1877 (or 1884) in Patras, Dimitris Tofalos showed signs of his strength from the early years, when he tried to lift a small wagon. During this attempt he got severely injured, doctors proposed to cut his arm but his father reacted. As a result, one of his arms was shorter than the other. He won olympic gold in Athens 1906 Mid-Olympics (on April 27th) after defeating the Austrian Josef Steinbach (136,5kg) by lifting 142,4kg. He moved to the US right after the games, where he took up wrestling and later became coach of the famous Greek-American wrestler Jim Londos
