In 2001, the city of Thessaloniki will complete 2.316 years of life, since Kassandros, the King of Macedonia gave his wife’s name to the city, who was the sister of Alexander the Great. Since that very day, Thessaloniki passed through different times of world history, witnessed moments of cultural and financial flourish that, turned it into a significant center of the wider European cultural and commercial development. Nowdays, Thessalonki is the 2nd Greek city in poulation, active in all sectors of finance and culture, not only in national but also international level. In 1997, it was the cultural capital of Europe while, every year it hosts the large International Merchant Exposition. As much as sports are concerned, it has got great tradition, and it has contributed a great deal to the development of sports generally in Greece, as it has been the host of a series of world and international events of many different sports and, most important, all of them have been staged in high level competition venues which are quite essential for the best possible organization of such significant events. Thessaloniki’s port is one of the biggest in Greece, and the beaches which can be found in a small distance from the center, are full with tourists every summer. While staying in Thessaloniki, one can visit its 23 museums, the famous castles and the white tower while can also have a very intense life and enjoy oneself in one of the numerous clubs, restaurants, taverns, either in the center of the city or at the seaside.
