International Weightlifting Tournament 2003 • IWF Grand Prix
Dimitris Tofalos |
Born in Patras in 1877 (or, according to some sources, in 1884), Tofalos began showing his strength at an early age. Still a young boy, he seriously injured his arm in when he tried to lift a rail carriage. Doctors proposed to amputate, but he refused and went on to win the gold medals at the Intercalated Olympic Games of 1906 in Athens, despite his ‘bad’ arm being 2½ inches shorter than his ‘good’ one. Tofalos lifted 142.2 kg to 136.5 kg of Austria’s Josef Steinbach at the 1906 Games. Following his success he moved to the United States, where he took up professional wrestling and became the trainer of Jim London. |
Pericles Kakousis |
Born in 1879, Kakousis was a member of the Panellinios Club of Athens. At the 1904 Olympic Games at Saint Louis he won the gold medal, with 111.7 kg (27.33 kg more than silver medallist Oscar Osthoff of the USA). He remained in the USA for two years, but returned to Atens for the Intercalated Games of 1906, where he finished 6th with a lift of 121.5 kg. |
