Dear IWF Members, Male and female lifters and coaches, men and women weightlifting friends, We are about 15 months away from the beginning of the 3rd millenium and my country, the city of Athens is being hastily prepared to hold the last international weightlifting event of the 20th century. In the city of Athens, sports and culture are harmonically combined throughout the milleniums of world history and manage to offer the feeling of human moderation, peace of mind an continuous creativeness. In this city of Athens and Athena, the goddess of moderation and wisdom in ancient times, the weightlifting sport will close the circle of 20th century and move on to the dawn of 21st century. The Hellenic Weightlifting Federation, always supported by the Hellenic State and in close co-operation with the International Weightlifting Federation, will do its best in order to hold competitions equal not only to the sport’s history but, also, to our country’s tradition to organise successful world championships. The international weightlifting power, the city of Athens, the optimistic prospective of the new millenium and new age, all these great and wonderful events, that we’ ll have the chance to witness the 10 days of the 1999 Athens World Weightlifting Championships.
